Pete will read, sign and answer readers' questions about In the City of Bikes to conclude the second Starbucks book club selection.

In the City of Bikes: The Story of the Amsterdam Cyclist

Pete Jordan, author of the wildly popular Dishwasher: One Man’s Quest to Wash Dishes in All Fifty States, is back with a memoir that tells the story of his love affair with Amsterdam, the city of bikes, all the while unfolding an unknown history of the city's cycling, from the craze of the 1890s, through the Nazi occupation, to the bike-centric culture adored by the world today

Part personal memoir, part history of cycling, part fascinating street-level tour of Amsterdam, IN THE CITY OF BIKES: The Story of the Amsterdam Cyclist is the story of a man who loves bicycling in a city that is obsessed with bikes.

When Pete’s story begins, his goals for an upcoming semester abroad are clear: study how to make America’s cities more bicycle friendly, and then return home—simple and straightforward. Once he sets foot in Amsterdam, however, Pete falls immediately in love with the city that already lives life on two wheels—and suddenly, he can’t imagine living anywhere else.

But hardships loom in Pete’s adopted homeland. As Pete skips from one short-term apartment rental to the next, stability stays just out of reach and work is increasingly difficult to find. Meanwhile he stumbles upon unforeseen pleasures in his daily bike rides and begins his dig into the city’s cycling past. What he discovers there is no less an untold cultural history of Amsterdam.

From cycling’s beginning as an elitist pastime in the 1890s to the street-consuming craze of the 1920s, from the bicycle’s role in city-wide resistance to the Nazi occupation to the legendary (yet mythical) success of the White Bikes in the 1960s all the way up to the mysterious bike fishermen of today, in IN THE CITY OF BIKES Jordan illuminates the bicycle’s integral role in shaping both the psyche and city of Amsterdam.

Some highlights from the LA Times Review:

"a funny, engaging and exhaustively researched tribute to Amsterdam's unique biking history."

"Jordan is an honest, self-effacing narrator, and there's much that's lovably comic about his inauguration into Amsterdam cyclo-culture."

"'In the City of Bikes' is an insightful book. And it's an especially enjoyable one for anyone who's ever thought the world would be a better place if more people rode bikes to work — and if they rode them to the hospital to deliver their babies too."

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Starbucks The Bank - Friday, May 17th at 19.00

ABC and Starbucks are very happy to announce that author Herman Koch will come to Starbucks The Bank to discuss his international bestseller The Dinner. Herman will read, sign and answer readers' questions about The Dinner to conclude the first Starbucks book club selection.

About the Starbucks book club:
In April, Starbucks and ABC introduced the ABC/Starbucks book club: an open English language bookclub. The first book selected for this new bookclub format is The Dinner by Dutch author Herman Koch.

About Herman Koch:
Herman Koch is a best-selling novelist. In previous years he was also an actor, comedian and satirist. Published in 1989, Herman Koch’s first novel, Red Ons, Maria Montenelli, was a mixture of confession and tirade in the style of J.D. Salinger, about a victim of a Montessori education living in the swagger of South Amsterdam. Shortly afterwards he began writing and acting in the iconic comedy sketch show, Jiskefet, a precursor of shows like Little Britain. It ran for fifteen years.

In later novels, he developed his unique form of ironic realism and tackled topical themes. His central characters are burdened by their empty existence, they feel unjustly treated and search for a way out, often vicariously, through other people’s stories. After six well-received novels, Koch’s seventh, a tragi-comedy entitled The Dinner broke new ground and paved the way to international acclaim. His most recent novel, Zomerhuis met Zwembad, has also been widely translated.

About the book:

"A European Gone Girl." --The Wall Street Journal

An internationally bestselling phenomenon: the darkly suspenseful, highly controversial tale of two families struggling to make the hardest decision of their lives -- all over the course of one meal.

The next Starbucks Bookclub selection
From May 18th onwards Pete Jordan's Dishwasher/In the City of Bikes will be on sale in Starbucks the Bank and the American book Center at the Spui. A date for the next book club meeting (in July) will soon be announced on the ABC website and on facebook and the blog of the Bank.

Links:

* <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">http://www.abc.nl/blog/?p=33337Jeroen Bolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05822806698801575898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8230419051566641027.post-86297348129842729222013-04-02T20:49:00.002-07:002013-04-05T01:43:44.303-07:00Welcome to ou Starbucks book club!
